India's Agricultural Exports and Kerala's Role in Spices

India stands as one of the world's top agricultural exporters, with its agri-exports demonstrating robust growth amid global demand for rice, marine products, and spices. In FY24 (April 2023–March 2024), the sector achieved a record value of approximately $53.1 billion, up from $51.7 billion the previous year, accounting for about 12% of the nation's total merchandise exports. For the first nine months of FY25 (April–December 2024), exports rose 6.5% to $37.5 billion, driven by surges in basmati rice (up 13% to $7.31 billion), coffee, and tobacco, though marine products dipped slightly. Key markets include the USA, UAE, China, and Bangladesh, bolstered by government initiatives like the Agricultural Export Policy aiming for $60 billion by 2027.

Spices form a cornerstone of this success, with India commanding over 40% of the global trade and exporting $4.46 billion worth (nearly 1.4 million tonnes) in FY24—a 6% increase year-over-year. Chilli leads at 31% of spice exports, followed by cumin, turmeric, and pepper. Kerala's contribution is pivotal, as the state dominates production of high-value spices like black pepper (over 90% of India's output), cardamom, and nutmeg, fueling about 70–80% of the nation's spice exports by volume and value. In 2024, Kerala's overall exports, heavily anchored in spices, grew over 20%, supported by organic certifications and the Spices Board of India's quality programs. This positions Kerala as a global flavor powerhouse, enhancing India's agri-trade resilience.
