India's Fresh Green Cardamom and Nutmeg Exports

India is the world's second-largest producer and exporter of spices, commanding a 12% share of the global market valued at around $35 billion in 2023. In FY 2023-24, the country's total spice exports reached a record $4.46 billion (1.54 million metric tons), up 6% from the previous year, driven by demand for premium varieties like cardamom and nutmeg. Fresh green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) are key contributors, prized for their aromatic profiles in global cuisines, beverages, and pharmaceuticals. Below is a concise overview of their export dynamics, with emphasis on Kerala's pivotal contribution.

Fresh Green Cardamom Exports

Green cardamom, often called the "queen of spices," accounts for a significant portion of India's spice exports, valued at approximately $155 million in 2023. India exported around 4,000-5,000 metric tons annually, primarily as whole pods (HS code 0908.31), with shipments totaling over 1,100 in the 12 months ending September 2024—a 4% year-on-year growth in volume but a slight -5% dip in overall value due to price fluctuations. Key destinations include the UAE ($38.6 million, 2,238 tons), Saudi Arabia ($21.3 million, 1,159 tons), the US ($7.5 million, 444 tons), and Kuwait ($6.5 million), representing 60% of outflows. Exports surged 63% in September 2024 alone, fueled by Middle Eastern and North American demand for its use in teas, sweets, and masalas. Globally, India trails Guatemala but leads in premium small green varieties.

Kerala dominates production (over 60% of India's green cardamom output from the Idukki and Wayanad regions), translating to a substantial export share. The state's humid, shaded estates yield high-quality pods, supporting initiatives like the Spices Board's "SPICED" program to boost sustainable yields and exports.

Nutmeg Exports

Nutmeg exports from India, including whole seeds and mace (the seed's aril), totaled about $40-50 million in 2023 as part of the broader $133 million nutmeg-mace-cardamom category (HS 0908), down 26% from 2022 due to global supply gluts and quality scrutiny. India ranks second globally after Indonesia, exporting roughly 10,000-12,000 metric tons yearly, with 78% as unprocessed whole nutmeg. Major markets are the UAE (49% share), Vietnam, Iraq, and Brazil, accounting for 85% of volume. Prices averaged $8,000-8,700 per ton in 2024, with powder forms commanding premiums at $8,753 per ton (up 3.6% YoY). Asia drives 80% of global nutmeg trade, where India's output benefits from tropical climates.

Kerala is the epic center, producing 80-90% of India's nutmeg (primarily from Thrissur and Palakkad districts), making it a cornerstone for value-added exports like essential oils and powders.

Kerala's Share in India's Spice Exports

Kerala contributes 25-30% of India's total spice exports by value ($1.1-1.3 billion in FY 2023-24), leveraging its 40% share in black pepper, 60% in cardamom, and near-monopoly on nutmeg production. The state's spice sector employs over 1 million people and benefits from Kochi's port infrastructure, handling 70% of southern exports. However, challenges like ethylene oxide contamination led to 2024 bans in Singapore and Hong Kong, prompting stricter quality controls. Government support via the Spices Board (headquartered in Kochi) aims for $10 billion in national exports by 2030, with Kerala targeting doubled output through climate-resilient farming. This positions the state as a growth engine, enhancing India's 40% global production dominance.
